Mindset Monday – How to be more mindful
What is mindfulness? The official definition is “a mental state achieved by focusing one’s awareness on the present moment, while calmly acknowledging and accepting one’s feelings, thoughts, and bodily sensations, used as a therapeutic technique”
Mindfulness is life changing. No joke. What if you didn’t need to react in a situation and instead you could just be in the moment? What if could think before you spoke? What if you could learn to appreciate life as it was right now?
The truth is that life is an experience we see through our own lens. Someone else can experience the same situation but feel completely differently about how it went. We each pick up on different nuances in every situation. How many times have you reacted in a situation and then later realized you overreacted or didn’t see the whole story? Mindfulness helps us be present and take in more of the situation so we can respond calmly…the way we all want to. Think of a heated discussion – have you ever envied the person yelling, out of control? Of course not! Many of us can relate to that person and wonder how the other person is staying so calm!
Mindfulness is actually really hard at first. It makes us slow down, turn off the distractions, and just be in the present moment, which can feel uncomfortable. There are many ways to get started, but like anything else it is a habit that takes time to develop. This website has a great post about how to start being mindful during your day.
I encourage you all to start being mindful with 1 small habit today. Do that for a week and then add another habit. If you continue you this for a month, I promise you’ll be amazed at how you feel!
